Reading attendance patterns before the programme board

Programme boards rarely need every weekly attendance figure. They need to know whether a dip is seasonal, tied to assessment weeks, or concentrated in one cohort that needs advising attention.

Start by aligning the calendar: mark public holidays, major assessment blocks, and known campus events. Without that frame, a mid-term drop looks like a crisis when it may simply track the same rhythm as last year.

Next, compare cohorts that share the same timetable structure. Parallel year groups often move together. When one group diverges while siblings hold steady, the conversation shifts from campus-wide fatigue to a specific advising or timetable issue.

Present three views only: overall trend for the term, the cohort that diverges, and the advising actions already taken. Boards respond better to a short narrative with clear visuals than to a spreadsheet dump.

Finally, note what you will watch for the next four weeks. Engagement reading is useful when it ends with a concrete observation window rather than a permanent alarm.
